Help someone to quit smoking
Smoking is an addictive habit that if it is not monitored can lead to addiction to the cigarette. It begins with a single puff then continues to one, two and packet then finally before you know it you become a chain smoker who cannot do without smoking. If you have a friend, relative or any person whom you want to help quit smoking then there are tips that can help you through this process.
Become a good listener
The best thing to do to help someone quit smoking is become sympathetic, become a good listener and a good friend. You can decide to indulge in their activities or formulate others that can help you have peaceful time with the addict. This will help them feel better since they get to know that people care about them. During these free moments with the person, you can decide to talk to them about the benefits to quit smoking.
Become a good listener to them. Give them the chance to talk to you about their condition. Do not advice them by force just get their suggestions and provide your suggestions when they ask. Being a good listener will help them open up and tell you what they feel about their situation. Being there for them helps them develop the confidence in you and encourage them to quit smoking.
Don’t criticize
Avoid cases that can lead to criticism, shaming or nagging the smoker. As you try to help them quit smoking the last thing they expect is a person who nags them and constantly criticizes their habits. Encourage them and help build their self esteem by telling them they are worthy. Instead you can decide to encourage them towards getting advice from you and other people they feel comfortable talking to. Support them through this by talking them into opening up without forcing them to. Otherwise they will feel you are invading their life.
Involve activities
Involve the person in entertaining and positive activities based on the ones they love or you can suggest for new trial and along the way they will learn to appreciate more important and healthy activities. You can also show affection like taking them for a treat, sending flowers and rewards for the progress they make towards quitting smoking. If you are to criticize then criticize the nicotine and not your friend. You can do this by showing them the effect that the nicotine has had in their life. Blame it on the smoking and not your friend. This will help them quit smoking and know they can be better without nicotine.
Propose healthy things
You can advocate for healthy diets and drinks every time you are together. Making yourself available will always remind him of the goal to quit smoking. It will also reduce the chances of time for smoking. If he has behavior that irritates you do not take it personally help them cope with the emotions and physical challenges they go through especially due to the withdrawal syndrome. Look at the things that make them smoke. If it is stress help them in managing the stress or finding solutions to the underlying situations. This will help them to quit smoking.
