Smoking is a habit and just like all other addiction, it can be over come. However, preparing yourself to get over the habit is the key step that will enable you go through the process to the last step. Preparation gives you control and the date of the big day; it gives you momentum.
List the reasons
The first preparation step is to make a list of all the reasons you want to quit smoking. There could be no action without a reason. Have a list and let it be your point of encouragement to speed your desire to quite. Carry the list with you all the time and at least go over it and read it at least ten times a day. This will set up your mind to take action in overcoming the condition.
Optimism is the key
Being optimistic is the best approach to over come your smoking addiction. Do not listen to what people say about quitting, do not focus on the negative sides of the process; be positive minded. Do not let your desire to smoke alter your plan either. There are many benefits that follow after stopping the smoking habit. Develop a strong reason to yourself to stop the smoking and believe in it.
Start slowly
Gradual conditioning is the key start to the process. You can not quite smoking all of a sudden; it has to be gradual and progressive. Start by reducing the number of cigarettes you take per day by at least two to three. The reduction should increase gradually with time progression. This will help tame your body to adapt to the habit of not smoking. Abrupt stop to smoking does work, but not for all people, gradual stopping is the best.
Stopping smoking is not easy but at the same time it is not impossible; actually, nothing is impossible on this world, what seems impossible only means it will take a little longer to achieve. Ignore the symptoms of quitting and know that they will not be permanent. At least 3 million Americans quite smoking, what makes you think you can not make it?
Setting standards
Setting standards, bets or promises could help in gearing up your desire of quitting. Make a bet with a friend that you will stop smoking or a promise to get over the habit over a given period of time. This will help work hard to keep a promise or to not lose on a bet.
External help may be needed
Joining a counseling group could also help you. Here, you will learn through other people sharing how they got over the process and what steps they followed. Moreover, with the group, there is follow up which will monitor you and counsel you through the process. If you do not have the time to join a counseling group, you consult your confidant to monitor you and remind you of what you are planning on doing.
Break the habit
Smoking is a habit, and all habits can be overcome. In personal arguments, the negative side always takes the lead. The only effective way to overcome smoking is never to argue with yours consent when the desire shows up; just say no and walk away.
